Historical
background
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) is the institution that has represented Romanian entrepreneurs for over 150 years, within various political and economic systems.
As direct vectors of the free market economy, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Romania have actively contributed to the development of businesses and, consequently, to the development of the Romanian State.
The representative nature of the Chamber System in Romania—the business organization with the most extensive network at the national level, along with its prerogatives in the sphere of business development in Romania—ensures the necessary conditions for integrating the Commercial Merit distinction into the portfolio of recognized competencies of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania.
Since the establishment of the first Chambers of Commerce in 1864, through the signing of the Royal Decree No. 1363 by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the activity of the Chambers of Commerce has been aligned with economic realities, providing traders with services in the fields of commercial and industrial education and international relations. The Chambers of Commerce have contributed to the liberalization of trade, the modernization of transport and communications, and the expansion and consolidation of the domestic market.
The granting of the Commercial Merit distinction is an initiative that should contribute to stimulating the competitiveness of the economic and business environment. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania, as an exponent of the market economy, has the opportunity to strengthen its position and institutional mission, both in relation to the business community and at the level of central public authorities.
